Friday September 7, 2007
Learning the facts is essential, yet more and more children are not committing the facts to memory anymore and research tells us that knowing the facts often leads to greater achievement in mathematics. If the old fashioned methods aren't working, then try making it fun for everyone. Use games and music to help make learning fun. Here are some resources to help:And of course....if you want to do it the old fashioned way.....here are some worksheets to help.

As a teacher for many years, I’ve seen 7th grade students up through adults who did not learn their times tables. It makes all of math so much harder. I made a web site for students to get simple practice on the facts, it is http://www.geocities.com/multiplicationfacts . I have a link there to a more fun approach. A professional video game designer for one the big companies decided to make a video game that incorporated multiplication facts as part of the game so that the players couldn’t reach the next levels until they knew the facts for that level.. It’s really cool. The link is on my web site.

What do you mean the old fashioned methods do not work anymore? The reason why students are having trouble in math regardless of course is because there are too many OUT OF SUBJECT math teachers in the world of education today. Where are the true math teachers of yesteryears?
There are people teaching algebra 2, for example, who never took algebra 1 or science teachers teaching calculus when they don’t even know how to spell the word. I NEVER blame the students.
