Fermat and the World's Famous Math Problem!

Sunday July 27, 2008
It took until 1993 to solve Fermat's last theorem which was considered the World's Greatest Mathematical Problem! However, in 1993 this mathematician surprised and excited the world of Mathematics, when he discovered the proof!

Unfortunately Fermat received very little recognition during that time, however, today he is considered to be one of the 'fathers' of analytic geometry. Have you guessed the mathematician who solved the problem yet? Find out who here.

It is stated:

“However, in 1931 this mathematician surprised and excited for the world of Mathematics, when he discovered the proof!”

My question:

Is there a typo here? Shouldn’t the word “for” be “from”?

There is a numerical error in this article. First you state the proof took until 1931 and then you state it took until 1993. People unfamiliar with this mathematical achievement would wonder which is the correct date–1931 or 1993. It’s 1993.

Fermat’s last theorem was considered the world’s greatest mathematical problem by non-mathematicians, mainly because anyone with a basic understanding of maths could understand the problem, if not the solution. Most mathematicians would say the Riemann Hypothesis is the greatest problem. Hilbert said that if he slept for 500 years the first question he would ask when he awakened would be had it been solved.
