Better Ability to Estimate = Greater Understanding

Sunday November 2, 2008
Whenever I wanted to quickly check for understanding of concepts in my class, I used to ask questions that would have my students quickly estimate the answer. You see, when a student is capable of estimating correctly, chances are that they have a better understanding of the concept. Try it out on your students sometime, those with way off estimates usually need some remedial help.

Here's a handy tutorial on how to round numbers, a great spot to ask for estimations too! Once you think they've grasped rounding the numbers, try the worksheets on rounding.

Rounding is different from estimating, although rounding can be used as a technique for estimating.

It is equally important to train children how to do estimate on fractions, not just limit to whole number and decimals.
