Not All Math Worksheets Are Created Equally

Saturday December 20, 2008
David Carr tells you what to look for when assessing math worksheets. With the plethora of math worksheets available freely on the internet, be sure that you are getting the worksheets that are most suited to your child's or student's needs. Although I like the tips from David, I also might add, be sure that the worksheets you select for the concept aren't random. For instance, if you're beginning polynomials - start with simplifying like terms, move to adding and subtracting polynomials beginning with pairs of like terms. In other words, be sure to use worksheets at the right developmental level and move forward in levels of difficulty.

Great point by David and you Deb. IF you google math worksheets, a ton of sites come up- both free and paid. It is important for students and parents to differentiate good ones from not so good sites. These pointers are helpful.

One thing I would say is that students and parents should not get disappointed if are not able to solve these math worksheets completely. They have to keep in mind that these were not designed for a specific individual or based on a specific text. Math is vast and different texts can interpret a few topics differently and may have a different approach. Identify the site that works the best for you and if you cannot solve a worksheet completely, make sure that you have covered the topic in its entirety and if you have, try another one from a different site.
