Students in the 3rd and 4th grades should understand perimeter. Initially, they'll start with basic 3 and 4 sided polygons and then move forward to multi-sides polygons. Here are some basic perimeter worksheets that help with the concept. Students at this age should always be challenged with questions like:
'How would you find the perimeter of a circle.
'What is an easy way to determine the perimeter of a cone?'
Hopefully, they come up with the idea of putting a string around it and then measuring the string. As always, give them some think and struggle time to come up with solutions.
