An algebraic expression is a mathematical expression that will have variables, numbers and operations. The variable will represent the number in an expression or an equation. Answers may vary slightly. Being able to write expressions or equations algebraically is a pre algebra concept that is required prior to taking algebra.

The following prior knowledge is required before doing these worksheets:

  • An understanding that a variable is a letter such as x, y or n and it will represent the unknown number.
  • That an expression is a statement in math that will not contain an equals sign but it can containt numbers, variables and operation signs such as +, - x etc. For example, 3y is an expression.
  • That an equation is a statement in math that does contain an equals sign.
  • There should be some familiarity with integers which are whole numbers or whole numbers with a negative sign.
  • It is also important to understand and know the terms: quotient, product, sum, increased and decreased as they relate to operations. For instance, when the word sum is used, you will need to know that the operation involves adding or the use of the + sign. When the word quotient is used, it refers to the division sign and when the word product is used, it refers to the multiplication sign which is indicated by a . or by putting the variable beside the number as in 4n which means 4 x n

Writing out the algebraic expressions or equations and gaining familiarty with the process is a key skill required prior to simplifying algebraic equations. It's important to use the . when referring to multiplication as you don't want to confuse multiplication with x the variable. Although answers are provided on the second page of the PDF worksheet, they may vary slightly based on the letter used to represent the unknown. When you see statements like:
    A number times five is one-hundred-twenty, instead of writing n x 5 = 120, you would write 5n = 120, 5n means to multiply a number by 5.

Algebraic expressions are required in the curriculum as early as the 7th grade, however, the foundations to performing the tas occurs in the 6th grade. Thinking algebraically occurs with using language of the unknown and representing the unknown with a letter. When presenting a question like: The difference between a number and 25 is 42. Difference should signify that subtraction is implied and knowing that, the statement would then look like: n - 24 = 42. With practice, it become second nature!

I had a teacher that once said to me, remember the rule of 7 and re-visit. He felt if you performed seven worksheets and re-visited the concept, you could claim that you would be at the point of understanding. So far it seems to have worked.
