Each linear function has a slope. This article focuses on how to use a graph to identify the slope of a line.
Rise over Run
Refer to the graph. Put your finger on (2,2). Then trace the path up and over to (5,7).
1) How many units did you move up? 5
2) How many units did you move over? 3
Rise = 5
Run = 3
Slope = rise/run = 5/3
The slope of the line is 5/3.
How to Determine if the Slope is Positive or Negative
Trace the line from left to right. If the graph moves upward, then the slope is positive. If the graph moves downward, then the slope is negative.
