Roman Numerals used to be the standard numbering system and method of Arithmetic in Ancient Rome and Europe until about 900 AD. A combination of letters was used to signify value.
The values are:
I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1 000
