How To Use Target Worksheets:
Target worksheets have the target number of 9 which means to multiply each number in the next ring by 9. The product (answer) goes into the blank space in the outer ring of the target. When a student or child is somewhat comfortable with the nine timestable facts, begin playing beat the clock with these worksheets to help build speed and fluency.

It always helps to practice each of the multiplication fact families first before providing random fact worksheets. Random fact worksheets rarely lead to permanent learning. Let the student/child work on each fact table before moving on to the next fact family. It is wise to begin with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Once they are mastered, move to the squares (doubles) which are 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 7x7, 8x8, 9x9 ...) then to the 4 timestables facts, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Concentrate on each fact family separately over a period of time before moving on to the next fact family. Do not use random fact worksheets until the above facts are almost mastered. The goal with the timestables is to build fluency, speed and accuracy.

One of my favorite multiplication tricks with the 9 times tables is the two hand trick and put down a finger. Give this a try:

Using 4 times 9

1. Hold up both hands
2. Bend the 4th finger down.
3. There are 3 fingers in front of the bent finger and 6 fingers on the other side of the bent finger. Thus, the answer in 36.

Try it again with 9 x 7:
1. Hold up both hands
2. Bend the 7th finger down.
3. There are 6 fingers in front of the bent finger and 3 behind the bent finger. The answer is therefore 63.

Unfortunately, this great trick only works on the 9 timestables. However, students love it and it sure leads to accuracy.

It is important to note that some children will learn all the facts to 10 by the end of the 3rd grade, others will struggle all through school. With a concerted effort and a little bit of practice 4 or 5 days a week, children should be able to commit the facts to memory within a reasonable time frame.
