Prior to working on these worksheets, you should be familiar with:

  • working with variables, specifically isolating the variable (remember....what you do to one side, you must do to the other)
  • the order of operations
  • the four operations (adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying)

Overview of Isolating the Variable: Multiplication

Remember, if you multiply on one side, you must divide on the other and vice versa. It is important that both sides balance when you are working to isolate the variables, hence simplifying.
Take the question: y × 5 = 25

To isolate the variable, one must divide the other side by 5. Why divide? You are multiplying the variable y by 5, in order to isolate the variable, you must do the opposite which is dividing by 5.

Therefore,
y x 5 = 25 (move the 5 to the other side and divide which is the opposite of multiplying.
y = 25 ÷ 5 (we are balanced, now perform the calculation 25÷5 = 5)
y = 5 (y = 5, you can check to see if you are right: 5 x 5 = 25

We merely removed the 5 by doing the opposite of multiplying which is dividing to the other side.

Overview of Isolating the Variable: Addition

Remember, if you add on one side, you must subtract on the other, and vice versa. It is important that both sides balance when you are working to isolate the variables, hence simplifying.

Take the question:

6 + x = 11 In order to isolate x, we must subtract 6 from 11 (the other side)
x = 11 - 6 Now perform the calculation.
x = 5 Check to see if you are correct
6 + 5 = 11 (Go back to the original question)
You are correct!

The exercises on these worksheets are very basic, as you move on in pre algebra and algebra, you will see exponents, parenthesis, decimals and fractions and more variables. These worksheets focus on a single variable.
