A Formula is a Resource
- The purpose of teaching us math beyond the basics is for logic. There is no reason for the majority of the math I've learned in life. The reason we learn things we don't need is to round ourselves, understand the world. So when rather than understanding math, we memorize it, learning it at all is useless. Formula's were made to put numbers into to get an answer, rather than having to find it by other means. They're a resource, not a lesson. Also to be clear, kids say that without them math would be too easy. But really, learning is meant for understanding, not for the sole purpose of a challenge. We educate everyone because knowledge is good, we don't do it to make their lives harder.

No they should nod
- Maths formulas should not be memorized instead one has to know them and which to use when, memorizing will imply that you will sometimes not know which to use when and where so the best way is to know how to show their proofs and which to use when and how.

Succeed
- Maybe the laws of math could be posted on the wall of the classroom. And the Formula(s) in question posted on the board the day of the test. If the student doesn't understand it they won't succeed with the help anyway. Just like the Kindergarten classes having the alphabet up around the room or the gym having the rules on the wall. Let's help them succeed!

YES THEY SHOULD BE GIVEN
- In practical life, in order to be accurate of answers, the accurate formulas are open book. It is in the manner of applying the correct formula that correct solutions are found.

Yes, they should be memorize.
- Why? Because it's also part of learning. Memorizing keeps your brain sharp.

Fascinating
- To read the responses from people who are sure that students should memorize formulas, though they're not able to offer a coherent argument as to why. Particularly interesting to hear from students who think formulas must be memorized because "it's too easy to use a cheat-sheet." I always thought that understanding rather than rote was what mattered in human learning, but then, I have a less-typical view of what comprises meaningful education, particularly in mathematics.

To the point...
- There is no point to math; I'm speaking about all math. You cannot take real life and turn it into numbers and have those numbers infinitely equal the same thing; there is too much chaos to invoke. You cannot tell me that everyone burns calories at the same rate and you cannot tell me that you know where a fly will be in the room four seconds from now; the fly may decide to go out the window. Math is a pointless, worthless tool that creates problems. It's funny to me to see how problems are created and THEN the use for that problem is created. How does the chicken come first in the mathbook every time?

Formulas are not meant to be memorised
- The first principle of a formula must be well understood, so that the formula can be derived at any time. After gaining a good understanding of the theory, when problems are solved, the formulas get stored in the brain. When the theory is well known, formulas can be modified or even be created according to the need.

wen
- Just know it by mind and heart.......... familiarize yourself with those formulas.

Yes but with the basics first
- This isnt a bad idea but some complicated formulas get worse when math students try to memorise them.I also believe the basics when memorized can help students pick up the more complicated ones.so tests should start with the basic ones
- —Guest it aint a bad idea
Yes and No
- Well it isn't really needed to memorise anything in maths, but it is really the trouble of having to find the formulas or asking someone for it which takes the time. I mean, If you truly understand maths, its a piece of pie, If you don't understand its like stuck in the mud. While understanding maths, formulas get stuck into the head anyway. So yeah.. :D

Not really
- It is not really to be given during test but in the examination bcos many student forget things easily dat's why it should be given on the day of examination.thank you

Valuable formulas
- Students might value the formula and might not, depends on how they will use it. Both teachers and students are lucky. Lucky in a sense that in terms of teachers they cannot be blame by their students in fact, they are given the chance to grab the formulas to use. When we talk about in terms of students they are no longer necessary to memorize the formulas all they have to do is to familiarize how to use and when and where to use certain formula. Possibly, they can be happy learning math problems.

Formulas is definitely a need!
- Basically, formulas would help students to easy solve the variety of solving problems without certain formulas probably, students would feel empty not just in mind but also nothing can pass. The more the formulas given, the more the students can learned because as soon as they always close to formulas later on it will retain to their memory. FORMULAS are more or less so beneficial.

FORMULA
- It depends on the formula ...the basic formulas which are quite important and are used frequently must be learnt! But if a student learns a complicated formula and then does not knowhow to use or where it use it ....it is USELESS!! Therefore, what i say is formulas can be learnt but the basic and the frequently used ones!
