L'Hopital's Rule

Thursday May 24, 2007
Guillaume de L'HopitalL'Hopital's Rule is used in Calculus on derivatives to help compute limits, it only applies to quotients whose limits are indeterminant forms. The rule is used to convert an indeterminate form to a determinate form, which allows for easier computation of the limit. The rule is named after the 17th-century French mathematician Guillaume de l'Hôpital, and the rule was first published in his book: Analyse des infiniment petits pour l'intelligence des lignes courbes.
